It has been a long time since I found a good paranormal/horror anthology, so I had a lot of hope for “Nightmares Unhinged.” It was small press, featured a couple names I knew, had an awesome cover that inspired Fear the Walking Dead: Season Two, and proclaimed to feature a variety of things that go bump in the night.
It didn’t deliver, to the point I didn’t finish the book.
There was only one female author featured in the entire anthology and it shows. You could FEEL the sexism dripping off of the pages as you read the majority of the stories I made it through. If women were featured at all they were there to be raped, attacked, killed, or rescued. Nothing else. Rather than tell interesting, unique stories the authors relied on these tired, sexist tropes to fake it. It wasn’t horrifying in any way, just annoyingly predictable. Things were frequently thrown in for the shock factor, rather than being developed into interesting and unique stories.
If you want a good paranormal/horror anthology this isn’t the book for you. If you want a book to reaffirm your sexism, this book would be great for you but I’m not sure how you ended up on my blog…
